The Community Mast - Belfast City Council

This project was to renovate a piece of waste ground in Inverary, East Belfast. We were successful in our bid to design and supply a piece of sculpture for the centre of the space.

The concept of a mast with spiral additions at the top hints at the industrial history of this region of Northern Ireland.  The Docks of Belfast were (and still are) crucial to the development of the city, and this region would have housed thousands of workers for the docks, as well as maritime and later, the aviation industries.

Community and Fabrication.

The community were very involved in this project, with meetings taking place with residents groups, schools and youth clubs.  The names of every participant were painstakingly welded onto the base of the post.  Some of the young people design tiles, about 15mm square, which were encoded into CAD files and used to build flags, mounted at the top of the mast.

The Cad files were used to program a laser-profiling machine, giving a remarkable quality of cut, and permanent record of those young peoples' involvment.

Project management

One of the key challenges in delivering any Public Art project is the management of several crucial ingredients.

We have delivered almost 20 projects since 2007,  requiring:
- effective planning
- engineering approvals
- roads Service TAS approval
- engineering design
- CAD
- artistic development
- and effective consideration of  installation, safety and maintenance
